Infection of the vagina is the most common gynecological condition encountered by physicians. Using PCR methodology, DPS is able to provide highly sensitive, specific, and reproducible test results for vaginitis within 72 hours.

Three distinct infections account for over 90% of vaginitis cases

  • Trichomoniasis (Trichomonas vaginalis): 15-20%
  • Vaginal candidiasis (Candida species primarily Candida albicans): 20-25%
  • Bacterial vaginosis (Gardnerella vaginalis and other anaerobic bacteria): 40-45%

The chart below may be used as a guide to identify and treat vaginitis

Obtaining medical history alone has been shown to be insufficient for accurate diagnosis. Please review our specimen collection guide to determine how to submit a sample to DPS for testing.
